This Being Human…

Rumi once wrote “This being human is a guest house.”
And I think:

We are all on our way somewhere else.
But in the meantime, we are here together.
What are we supposed to do in the meantime?

People are surprised by pain, tragedy, disaster.
But this isn’t our final destination; we are on the way.

I am not surprised.

The goodness of the day can be challenged by the next,
or the other.
Or the last.

We are all somewhere on our way to something.
While we are here, we can help each other get to the place we want to be.
It’s like realizing that you don’t have to be perfect or healthy or whole.

You don’t have to be anything but patient.

I am not perfect – not yet.
I am not eternal – not yet.
I am here in the meantime, on my way to the next.

Being human is like being rented;
this is borrowed space.

This being human is a guest house.
