Wordless Wednesday: The Smile of a Graduate

PhD graduation 2009

June is the month of the graduate. From high school to university, you make the leap or celebrate loved ones crossing the finishing line.

Now that I’m a faculty member, I get to feel the pride of graduations from another perspective: that of the person helping to prepare the student for the real world.

Here are some images of my graduations over the last 12 years. First from undergrad and then later with my PhD. In each one I can’t tell if I’m proud or relieved! What were the emotions you had at graduation?

Wordless Wednesday: Rain, an Original Animated Tale

This is a still image from the DFI (Doha Film Institute) production of Rain, a cartoon retelling of an Arabic folktale.

I had a chance to see the preview of the animated short, and it promises exciting things for the future. The story follows a young traveler who is taken in a Bedouin tribe when he is found ill in the desert. Bedouins are known for their hospitality and this film brings this tale to light. There are two version of the film, one in Arabic and another in English.

The highlight of the evening for me was the soundtrack for this film, the songs composed from the rich tones of Arabian instruments, including the oud.
